Epigenetic regulation is the study of how genes are expressed, or “turned on” and “turned off”; the human genome contains all the instructions needed to build and maintain a person, but those instructions are not always followed.

Epigenetics is the mechanism that controls gene expression. Just as importantly, epigenetic changes can be passed down from one generation to the next.

Scientists are only beginning to understand the role epigenetics plays in human health, but there is already evidence that epigenetic changes can influence longevity.

In one study, longevity was found to be associated with increased DNA methylation, a type of epigenetic change.
With further research, it may eventually be possible to use epigenetic therapy to slow aging or even prevent age-related diseases.
